Hair Care for Curly Hair

IMG_3496I have really curly hair and I have always had a hard time down packing a routine. I do not use a blow dryer because it makes my hair frizzy and damages my ends. I have been air drying my hair for over 6 years now and recently I have started letting my hair dry in a t-shirt to help form my curls. This is a trick that I absolutely love. If you have naturally curly hair you don’t even have to put anything in it, just scrunch your curls up and wrap your hair in a t-shirt. My curls are usually curly for the first day after washing before brushing my hair and then they turn wavy with the underneath staying curly. I have tried many products.

IMG_3506 The one I love most is the DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel which I scrunch into my hair to help form my curls. Before I use that though I always prep my hair. I use Schwarzkopf BC Repair Rescue Sealed Ends and then I will usually put a hair oil or treatment in my hair and brush that all through. Right now my favourites are the Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil, Eva-Nyc Mane Magic 10-in-1 Primer, and It Haircare 12-in-1 Leave in Treatment with Moroccan Argan Oil. My hair is thick so I find I need a lot of product. A little only goes so far. Some times I also seal everything in after the DevaCurl with my Bumble and Bumble Surf Foam Spray which is in between a mouse and a sea salt spray. It leaves my hair feeling soft and helps tame some of my frizz. This is more for if I am going outside after I take my hair out of the t-shirt and I know it may be windy outside. I have also used this product on its own (after my sealed ends) and it works great if I am just going to a beachy carefree look.

Hair Care Routine 2017

Hello, all you lovely people! It’s been a long time since we’ve posted really…anything and for that we are sorry! We are back though and we have some really cool posts coming up now so make sure you click that follow button so that you can receive notifications for when we post! Now onto my hair care routine!

Last August I cut 8 inches off my hair and while I loved it, I will admit I missed my long hair instantly.

My hair has gone through quite a bit of transition this year from colours to cuts to bleach and I’ve managed to not only make it grow faster but also stronger by changing up a few things in my hair care routine and also some lifestyle changes.

First, dry shampoo has become my new best friend! My favourite is the Batiste Original Dry Shampoo because it instantly refreshes my hair without leaving any weird residue (although I will tell you that the XXL Volume dry shampoo does leave a weird feeling in your hair and is not brush friendly!). Anyways, back to the Original Dry Shampoo. It retails for roughly 8 dollars and is a complete game changer. I find my hair reacts weirdly to dry shampoos and this is the first one I have never had any problems with! With this dry shampoo, I can get away with washing my hair once to twice a week!

Second, I’ve changed my shampoo and conditioner. I’ve switched to using purple shampoo and conditioner to help tone my transitioning blonde hair. I use John Frieda’s Colour Renew Tone Correcting Shampoo and Conditioner and have found that it has really helped keep my blonde from turning brassy (which is not a good look!).

Third, my hairdresser swears by BC Hairtherapy Repair Rescue and I have to agree! I use a small amount of product and run it through my hair after a shower, really working it into my ends. This has helped prevent my hair from getting dry, frizzy and my ends from splitting.

Fourth, I only colour (foil) my hair every 5 – 6 weeks which helps prevent breakage since my hair is given a nice break between sessions and isn’t completely bleached to hell (pardon my language).

Fifth, gummies. Yep I said it, gummies. Every day I eat 2 Nature’s Bounty Hair, Skin & Nails Gummies with Biotin and I have noticed quite a difference in not only my hair but my nails and skin as well so those are a plus! My hairdresser even commented on how quick my hair has been growing these past few months!

Finally, I use a lot less heat than I used to! I let my hair air dry most days as it’s naturally wavy. I use the lowest heat setting on all my tools when I do use heat (although I have to get in the habit of heat protectant because I seriously slack there!). I have found hairstyles that require little to no heat (keep an eye out for that post soon!) and have found my hair thanks me for it!

Just a few extra tips! If you find your hair is dry or damaged there are so many hair masks you can use to help but also coconut oil is amazing as well! My sister has extremely curly, thick hair that tangles a crazy amount and she puts coconut oil in her hair for 10 minutes, washes it out and goes on with her hair washing routine and she can actually run a brush through it and it’s softer!

I hope you found this helpful and maybe found some new products to try! What are some of your must-have hair products? Leave a comment and let me know!

Adrienne’s June Favourites

Prada Candy Kiss: IMG_1744

I love the Prada Candy line so of course when I saw there was a new one I had to try it. I feel in love with the scent instantly. It’s the perfume I never knew I needed. It is sweet smelling without being too much and it has this seductive scent in it that is just really alluring. This product retails for $98 at Sephora for a 1.7 oz bottle.

Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara: IMG_1483

I bought a travel size of this mascara in a set by Sephora called Totally Obsessed Set (which is now out of stock). I did not instantly fall in love with this mascara, however once I tried it a few times I figured out how to make sure my lashes would not clump and would stay looking soft and fluffy. This mascara is amazing once you figure out what works best for you with application. I like to gently apply my mascara and then go through with a clean mascara brush to un-clump my lashes, then wait a few second for the mascara to dry a bit and then build my lashes up with more mascara. I recently bought the waterproof version of this mascara and I can’t wait to wear it when I go to the beach! This product retails for $30 at Sephora for a full size.

Urban Decay Naked Foundation: IMG_1730

I already wrote a review on this foundation so I will not go on a huge rant about it. However if you do not feel like reading my previous review all I will say is that this foundation is perfect for summer and for people who want a foundation that is light weight and has minimal coverage but is buildable. I fell in love with this foundation because it literally feels like there is nothing on your face and I do not worry about my skin becoming oily and breaking out. This foundation retails for $47 at Sephora.

Vichy Normaderm Corrective Anti Acne Treatment: IMG_1747

I wanted to try a moisturizer that would help my face feeling hydrated without getting oily so I was recommended this product by a beauty expert. She told me to wash my face at night and then put on this moisturizer, and then in the morning to just wipe my face with toner (I have been using cleansing water). There has definitely been a difference in my skins appearance and while my acne has not completely gone away my breakouts are becoming fewer and I find my skin has not been very oily for the past month. I have used Vichy products in the past and I am probably going to go back to using them exclusively. This product retails for $29.99 CAD

Adrienne’s May Favourites

Well I decided this summer that I would try to post more on our blog, starting with some monthly favourites. So here we go and hopefully you all like my choices or are inspired to try them yourselves.

Smashbox Full Exposer Mascara:

IMG_1480

I feel like this has been a favourite of all of ours on this blog. I started out with two sample sizes of this product in October and November and I recently just purchased the full size. This product is an absolute life saver. I am the type to constantly try new mascaras because who doesn’t love new mascaras but after I have been using this product I don’t think I could go back. It lengths my lashes, gives them depth and volume with no clumps. I do always brush my lashes out with a clean mascara brush to help separate my lashes but honestly there is barely any separation that  needs to happen.

IMG_1482

Of course I am still going to continue to test new mascaras out because honestly it’s just so fun but this will continue to be my go to. It works for every occasion and helps me achieve a natural eyelash look (I am blonde so my eyelashes are pretty light without mascara and I like having my eyelashes look a little bit darker while looking natural). This product retails for $25 on Sephora

Benefit Gimme Brow in Light/Medium:

IMG_2774

I purchased this product half way through May so I haven’t been using it for very long, however compared to the other brow products I have been using this is hands down the best. I love simple, easy to use products, especially if I am just doing something quick for my makeup. I use this product practically everyday now and my eyebrows feel naked with out it. This product is perfect for anyone who likes their brows to look a little more bold and firmly in place, while still looking natural and not like they’re overly done up.

IMG_2773

This product is a tinted brow volumizing fibre gel that helps make you eyebrows look put together. I have kind of splotchy eyebrows so I have a few little gaps where they hair is either not there or is super light (because I am blonde) and this product helps to fill that in and make them look even. I use the shade Light/Medium which is perfect for blonde’s (or light brunette’s) looking to get bolder, natural looking eyebrows. This product retails for $30 at Sephora.

NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in Soft Spoken:

IMG_2776

The March Ipsy glam bag featured this product and two other colours (Kitten Heals and Pink Lust) . I received Kitten Heals; a bright red and when I tried it I instantly fell in love with the formula. However, I have lately been loving nude lip colours so when my local Shoppers Drug Mart started carrying NYX I knew I had to get more. I chose this colours because I like something a little darker than nude but still in the colour range. This product stays for about 4 + hours on my lips, even when I’m drinking. I’ve tried some of NYX’s other lip products but their Liquid Suede is my favourite line so far. It dries matte but it leaves your lips feeling soft and not overly dry looking. This product retails for $10 on the brands website.

My Skincare Products + Routine

Hey everyone! So I realized we have mainly talked only about makeup on this blog (I guess hence the name themakeupclubblog) but either way skincare is a huge part of my beauty routine so I figured I would show you what products I use and explain my routine!

Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water All-in-1 Makeup Remover &Cleaners ($6.96)

So this product is still relatively new to me and I’ve only used it a few times but I honestly love it! I didn’t know what it really was when I bought it b
ut the fact that it removes makeup without having to rinse it off after was a huge selling point for me. Basically you put the water on a cotton pad and simply wipe off your makeup; it removes everything! With one cotton pad I’m able to remove: foundation, concealer, setting powder, contour, mascara, eyeshadow and lipstick. That’s pretty impressive I’d say. What I love about this product is it’s very gentle on the skin.

St. Ives Even & Bright Pink Lemon & Mandarin Orange Scrub ($3.97)

I love St.Ives, they are my go to for face wash and scrubs so it’s no wonder that I had to try this as soon as I saw it! The smell is incredible and the scrub leaves my skin feeling smooth and clean.

Cetaphil DermaControl Moisturizer SPF 30 ($20.00 approx.)

I have combination skin and I get very oily around my nose and on my chin so finding a moisturizer that works well with hydrating my skin and not making it oily is very hard so when I came across this Cetaphil moisturizer a few years ago I was relieved. This moisturizer helps my skin stay smooth and hydrated without making my oily prone spots oily. It also has SPF which is a huge benefit.

Tucker Ashley Advanced Peptide Eye Complex – for dark circles & puffiness ($29.95)

I received this product in my Ipsy bag for January and have been using it periodically through out the past month and half. It’s on the more expensive side but it’s honestly amazing. I love the feel of this product and the consistency of it, it’s not runny and it’s not thick either.

The Body Shop Warming Mineral Mask (not sure of price)

I first tried this mask when Adrienne was over to my house and I love it! With just one use I was able to see my skin was brighter and less oily (thank god). I love the warming aspect of it (but don’t worry it doesn’t burn you or anything) and I love doing a mask on Fridays after a stressful week, it’s the best!

Routine:

AM: I don’t have much of a routine in the morning, I simply wash my face with my St. Ives facial scrub and apply my Cetaphil moisturizer and then apply my makeup for the day!

PM: Naturally the first thing I do is remove my makeup with my Garnier SkinActive Cleansing water and I follow that up with my St. Ives facial scrub to get rid of any left over oil or impurities. After I pat my face dry I apply my Cetaphil moisturizer followed by my eye cream (I realize you are suppose to apply eye cream morning and night but I honestly always forget to apply it in the morning!).

Weekly: I usually do at least 1 mask a week and currently I’m using The Body Shop’s Warming Mineral mask.

My Everyday Lip

IMG_1286I am a huge lover of M.A.C Cosmetic products so obviously my everyday lip combo uses their products. I start out with coating my lips in lip balm first so that they won’t be dry and can survive for a few hours, then I use my Prep + Prime Lip  and give my lips a quick coat so that they colour I use stays. Then I contour my lips with Whirl lip pencil by M.A.C. by lining my lips, making sure I round them, draw an “x” on my top lip under the cupids bow, and then draw a line in the middle of my bottom lip and then two more lines; one on each side in the middle between the centre of my lip and the end of my lips. After that that I either use my M.A.C. lipstick in Twig or I use my Meet Matt(e) Hughes Long-Lasting Liquid Lipstick in Committed by The Balm Cosmetics.

Twig tends to rub off easily so it only lasts on my lips for a maximum of 4 hours with limited drinking. I usually wear Committed because it last a very long time (roughly 8 hours, probably longer) and I usually have to take it off with baby oil and makeup remover if I want it off sooner. The two have a similar colour. Twig is a little more darker and pinky while Committed has a slightly more coral tone. Both look great for a nude lip colour.

I got Committed as a sample in my October 2015 Ipsy bag and this is definitely one of my top favourite products.
